ECI-13 is a correspondence course from the Air Force, free to enroll. It contains 4 thin books of information on Air Force and CAP history, communications, professional knowledge, communications, and leadership. After reading all 4 books, there is a closed book, 100 question test, with a 65% passing score. You have one year to complete the course, but our study group will help you do it in 4 weeks. This course is required for completion of Level II of the senior member training program, and for promotion to Captain. There are 8 members in the study group right now, and it's not too late to join us! We covered Volume 1 last Sunday, and will be reviewing Volume 2 this Sunday. If you want to get enrolled, please email me with your name and social security number, and feel free to join us on Sunday. We have extra copies of the books you can use until your own books arrive by mail. Please let me know if you have any questions! This school will cover all of the prerequisite tasks needed for mission pilots prior to actual flying. We will cover the basics of search techniques/patterns, ground signals, air-to-ground signals, ELT searches (with and without DF equipment), mission planning, CAP radio operations, airborne video/still picture taking techniques/patterns, and much more. Needless to say, we cannot cover all of the material in one night, but we can certainly cover a lot. Follow-on sessions will be schedule. If you have at least 175 hours PIC time or plan to reach that point in the near future, please plan to attend. I will have a CD ("CAP Aircrew Training") for everyone as well. The CD contains all of the course material as well as some additional reference material that you will find useful as a mission pilot. I have already mailed this disc to some. Please let me know if you will be attending so I can have enough discs for everyone and come prepared for some intense training. Hope to see you there. William E. Although we were unable to find him, we did, in my opinion, try our best. Over the last four days we did the following in support of the Mountrail County Sheriff. Monday, Nov 26: Minot ground team searched of all the section-line roads from Stanley (ND Hwy 8) to Des Lacs from US Hwy 2 south to 55th St NW (approximately 8 miles south of Stanley). The team was out from noon to about 8:30pm covering 249 miles. Tuesday, Nov 27: Minot aircrew/aircraft conducted an aerial grid search (E/W tracks, 2 mile spacing) of the area bordered on the north by ND Hwy 50, south by US Hwy 2, west by ND Hwy 8, and east by the town of Tagus. An Additional area was searched extending from ND Hwy 8 west to 103 degree west longitude and from 3 miles north of Tioga (48 degrees, 27 min north latitude) to 48 degrees, 33 min north latitude. Total flight time was 3.9 hours. No ground team was available. A helicopter (UH-1) from Minot AFB conducted a search (N/S tracks, 1 mile spacing) of the area bordered on the north by ND Hwy 50, south by US Hwy 2, east by Palermo, and west by ND Hwy 8. Wednesday, Nov 28: Bismarck ground team searched the city streets in the towns of Berthold, Tagus, Blaisdell, and Palermo, then all section-line roads north of US Hwy 2 to ND Hwy 50 from ND Hwy 8 to just east of Palermo. Additionally, they re-searched the section-line roads (previously driven on Monday) that are south of US Hwy 2 from ND Hwy 8 to Des Lacs. The ground team was out from 08:50am to 3:40pm, covering 328 miles. A ND/NG helicopter with FLIR from Bismarck also conducted a search covering the area west of Stanley and north and south of US Hwy 2 (approximately 5 miles each side). Thursday, Nov 29: Bismarck ground team was dispatched at 09:45 to search the section-line roads west of Stanley from US Hwy 2 north and south approximately 8 miles each side, all of the way to Tioga. The team returned home at 2:50pm covering 480 miles. Two aircraft were launched. The Bismarck aircraft/crew completed a search of the area west of Stanley to Tioga and from 48 degrees, 33 min north Lat south to US Hwy 2. Total flight time (including the flight in from Bismarck) was 4.2 hours. A Minot aircraft/crew was also dispatched to search the area south of US Hwy 2 from Stanley to Tioga and down to Lake Sakakawea. Total flight time for this sortie was 2.1 hours. An additional sortie was flown by the Bismarck aircraft/crew the searched the shores of Lake Sakakawea from the mouth of the White Earth river south to New Town, the Van Hook Arm, and Parshall. After that search was completed, the aircraft returned to Bismarck for a total of 1.8 hours. So, that was what we were able to accomplish. We flew a total of 12 hours and covered over 1057 miles of Mountrail and Ward Counties. As is always the case, personnel availability was a problem, especially in Minot. Most of the Minot squadron personnel work during the day or were otherwise not available. Luckily, Bismarck was able to pick up the slack. My thanks to all that were able to assist, especially Major Sean Johnson and his group of professionals in Bismarck. Conducting a search of this type with little or no clues is difficult enough, but having below zero temperatures, snow, and gusty winds made this even more difficult. Everyone did a magnificent job given what we had to work with. William E. Kay, Major, CAP ND Wing Director of Operations -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
